PPL EnergyPlus : Experience Our Energy.

How It Works

Who

The Renewables Program offers multiple renewable energy choices tailored to your needs. This program is available to residential, small business, commercial, industrial and wholesale customers.

Note that while any commercial, industrial and wholesale customers can contact us about the program, currently only residential and small-business customers from the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware can participate. Check back at this site in the future as we launch the program in additional states.

PPL EnergyPlus partners with many renewable energy developers, including its sister development company PPL Renewable Energy. Click here for a list of our current partners.

What
Through the Renewables Program, PPL EnergyPlus purchases and retires Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from renewable energy sites. A REC is granted to renewable energy projects for each megawatt-hour of electricity generated and delivered into the electricity grid. Each time a REC is retired, the equivalent of one megawatt-hour of renewable energy is used in the local, regional or national electricity grid instead of an equivalent amount of power from traditional fossil fuel-based and other traditional generation resources. The RECs PPL EnergyPlus will purchase through the Renewables Program may make the financial difference in developers’ and the market’s decisions to develop renewable projects over traditional energy generation.

Where
You can choose to support the development of renewable energy generation projects in local, regional and national markets, at any of three levels. Customers residing in Pennsylvania and New Jersey can choose the local option, where PPL EnergyPlus will purchase RECs from new wind and landfill gas power developers in their state. Regional resource RECs will support the development of new renewable energy projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. National RECs will support existing renewable energy projects in the U.S. market. (For our national program, click here to learn more.)

PPL EnergyPlus will post information on this site about new renewable energy projects that customers like you help develop as members of the Renewables Program.

Why
The Renewables Program uses your contributions to purchase RECs from developers of new renewable energy projects. These payments for RECs make renewable energy more financially viable and thus more prevalent in the energy marketplace. Your specific participation will lead to PPL EnergyPlus partnering or contracting with renewable energy providers to develop new renewable energy generation. The more renewable energy generation, the cleaner the energy in the electricity grid for all of us.

How
By joining the Renewables Program, you enable PPL EnergyPlus to purchase RECs locally and in the region. These RECs are certified using the nationally recognized Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS). GATS is a centralized registry and accounting system that regulates, monitors and verifies the environmental attributes of each generation unit that enters the PJM electricity grid, which encompasses most of the Mid-Atlantic region. GATS creates unique certificates that guarantee each REC we purchase is only claimed once, and is not re-sold or used to meet another’s compliance requirement.

The national RECs PPL EnergyPlus will purchase through the program will not be tracked in the GATS system, since they come from different regions across the United States outside the range of GATS.  Instead, national RECs will all come from Green-e certifiable sources. Click here for more information on what it takes to be a Green-e certifiable source.
