PPL has committed to invest at least $100 million in new renewable energy projects. Some of the projects PPL is developing or helping to build are listed below:
Hydroelectricity Energy through 2011 PPL announced more than $500 million in upgrades to hydroelectric generation facilites in Pennsylvania, Maine and Montana.
Solar Energy PPL Renewable Energy has contracted with the following sites to develop new solar installations:
- ReCAP
PPL Renewable Energy will design, construct and operate a 430-kilowatt solar energy system for the Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP) book storage facility jointly owned and operated by Princeton University, Columbia University and the New York Public Library.
The installation allows ReCAP to use renewable energy to meet about 20 percent of its peak energy needs. The power is supplied by PPL during daytime or “peak hours” when the facility consumes the most energy and utility prices are highest. The solar panels are expected to be operating by the end of 2008.
- Schering-Plough
PPL Renewable Energy will design, construct and operate a 1.7-megawatt solar energy system in Summit, N.J., for Schering-Plough, an international pharmaceutical and research and development company.
The rooftop-mounted solar system will be built on eight buildings throughout Schering-Plough’s campus. The solar system will allow Schering-Plough to use renewable energy to meet about 12 percent of its peak energy needs. The power is supplied by PPL during daytime or “peak hours” when the facility consumes the most energy and utility prices are highest. The solar panels are expected to be in operation by the end of 2008.
